The Prayer You Couldn't Finish | Romans 8:27

You were in the chair by the window with coffee you had already let go cold. You got about two sentences in, and then you were thinking about whether the offering slide was still in the old template. You never came back to it. There was no amen. It is still sitting there, half a thought, and every time you remember it you feel a small drop in your stomach. Or the other kind. You started praying at eleven forty at night and fell asleep inside the sentence. Which is a thing you would never confess in a green room.

Paul wrote the next verse for the ones with no amen on them. Romans 8:27. World English Bible. "He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit's mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God."

There are two parties doing the work in that verse and neither one of them is you. You are the third one. You are the reason it is happening. The Father searches. The Spirit intercedes. And the whole exchange happens at a level your vocabulary never reached. Paul has just told us the Spirit prays in groanings that cannot be put into words, and the obvious worry is that a prayer with no words is a prayer that cannot land. So he closes the loop. The One receiving it does not need the words. He searches hearts. He reads the mind of the Spirit directly. There is no handoff. It never leaves the room.

Then the last clause. According to God. The Spirit's praying lines up with what God wants. Which is not a claim that your bad prayer got edited on the way up. It is better than that. The prayer that was made for you was already right when it left. Not corrected. Prayed correctly the first time, by Someone who was never once confused about what you needed.

Somebody messaged me a while back asking whether an event we were doing was going to have a prayer tent, because they really needed prayer. The event was a month out. I told them not to wait. Pray right now. What they wanted, and they more or less said this, was somebody they felt was more holy than them to come alongside them. The tier does not exist. Paul does not put an exception on it.

Which prayer did you start this month and never finish? Do not go back and finish it as a debt you owe. Go back to it because you want to.
